Do you have a severe headache that interferes with your daily activities? You may be suffering from chronic migraine, a throbbing pain on one or both sides of your head that lasts at least 15 days in a month or for several days in a row.
Headache is multifactorial, which means it can be caused by problems in different parts of the body. Therefore, in case of presenting symptoms, it is important to seek the evaluation of a specialist. For example, chronic migraine can be the result of external factors, such as the patient’s habits, or a genetic predisposition.
According to the nonprofit National Headache Foundation, approximately 40 million people in the US suffer from migraine headaches, and the resulting absence costs American businesses about $20 billion annually.
Migraine is a disabling neurological condition that affects women three times more often than men. Experts say there’s no known cause or cure, but over-the-counter and prescription medications and non-pharmaceutical coping strategies may ease the pain for some.
Neurologist Carlos Uribe of Hospital Brasilia explains that people with chronic migraine need to control external factors to reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks.
Here are some doctor-recommended tips to control migraine:
1. Sleep regulation – the patient should ensure the quality of sleep, ensuring 7 to 8 hours of rest per night;
2. Stress Management – Migraine attacks are influenced by emotions. When a person is stressed, the body senses that he is in a dangerous state and produces hormones that increase heart rate, which can lead to headaches;
3. Regular physical activity – Studies show that getting physical exercise at least three times a week helps control headaches;
4. Be careful with posture – Bad posture damages the spinal cord. Tension in the shoulders, back, and neck can be a cause of a migraine attack;
5. Conscious use of analgesics – uncontrolled use of analgesics can lead to the onset of chronic migraine;
6. Attention to Food – The patient should be aware of foods that may be related to seizures. For example, chocolate, alcoholic and fermented drinks, cured cheeses, and soft drinks, often cause headaches.
