9 easy ways to quit sugar without giving up ‘sweets’

To start with, if you’re here, Congratulations! Because, you’ve actually had the idea of giving up sugar crossing your mind Well, that is a feat! Honestly, as soon as a great deal of my family & acquaintances were declaring their salvation from refined sugar, I couldn’t even think of reducing my share of sweets & sugar-loaded beverages (like milkshakes & Lassi), let alone quit sugar then!

Giving up what you love is tough. Is not it?

Or can it be?

At least not until I was 20+ years of age. It was through the humdrum of my engineering days that a couple of psychological struggles started towering me with moderate levels of anxiety. And I somehow found comfort in binging over candy condiments like that there was no tomorrow.

This cycle of anxiety about seeking solace in sweets would have never let me quit sugar.

The oddest part was that I never understood that it was getting addictive & it went on to become a very regular Hydra after marriage; with its tentacles spent in each emotion. Not just stress, but whether it were a party, a new job, random buddies’ date, article lunch munch or perhaps boredom. Sweets ALWAYS needed to sneak in!

There were lots of stress that inevitably morphed into constant anxiety & an extremely negative imagery of myself. Though I’d confront no inhibitions in presenting myself before a bunch or speaking to them for hours, there would still be a part of me that could feel gutted for no reason. I would feel vague even upon an accomplishment; always prepared to look back on myself & worry endlessly about things that just did not matter. Panic attacks were common no matter how small or negligible the scale of my difficulty was.

An annoying issue I especially noticed was how pathetically frail my memory was. So each time I needed to cover it with my spouse or Mother in mad ways (They still have their laughs at this BTW !)

So, here are 9 ways that helped ME quit sugar for good since this April. I am still going strong & think I’d ALWAYS BE!

1. FEEL the requirement to do so

You cannot stop anything simply because you see some folks around doing so. Or maybe an influencer for that issue. Neither do I say this article of mine will be THE EYEOPENER for you.

Since nothing can be shoved down your throat if you don’t realize yourself what a mess you’ve been in!

I had this coming only toward the end of this March when I realized I’d piled up some extra weight having worked my bum off the site & client assignments while feasting myself with biscuits & granola bars in between. Although I quit carbonated drinks, processed foods & packaged juices a good 5 years ago, I wonder how I allow Breezer be among my favorites later on!

Well, the idea of stopping white sugar did not dawn upon me with an overnight resolution or a straight kick in the butt out of anyone. But, I’d say it was a slow procedure. Frankly, I felt inspired to take this quitting affair seriously only after I saw my blogger friend Shailaja Vishwanath posting gritty Instagram tales about her life after quitting sugar. And this was a HUGE inspiration for me personally, who really advocated healthful lifestyle habits.

“What could I substitute all the sweetness with?”

Well, I have to totally credit the famous, yet incredibly humble Simrun Chopra here. Though she is never actually placarded her social platforms together with the cliched”QUIT SUGAR” articles, all her intent is to promote doable & simple ways to eat healthy. To avert this, invest in veggies & maintain a lot of them & some of the above-mentioned snacks handy. These could be carried in small boxes & they always fulfill your hunger pangs.

To keep healthy & active daily, it’s important to have at least 2 great snack times; between breakfast & lunch, & between lunch & dinner. Remember never to succumb to any peer pressure in case somebody offers you your regular sugary snack. Saying NO there rewards you forever. You’re not depriving yourself by the taste in any way. You simply ditch a crappy component!

I could easily stay away from Diwali sweets made out of sugar & instead relished those I made myself using healthier ingredients.
