To start with, if you’re here, Congratulations! Because, you’ve actually had the idea of giving up sugar crossing your mind Well, that is a feat! Honestly, as soon as a great deal of my family & acquaintances were declaring their salvation from refined sugar, I couldn’t even think of reducing my share of sweets & sugar-loaded beverages (like milkshakes & Lassi), let alone quit sugar then!
Giving up what you love is tough. Is not it?
Or can it be?
At least not until I was 20+ years of age. It was through the humdrum of my engineering days that a couple of psychological struggles started towering me with moderate levels of anxiety. And I somehow found comfort in binging over candy condiments like that there was no tomorrow.
This cycle of anxiety about seeking solace in sweets would have never let me quit sugar.
The oddest part was that I never understood that it was getting addictive & it went on to become a very regular Hydra after marriage; with its tentacles spent in each emotion. Not just stress, but whether it were a party, a new job, random buddies’ date, article lunch munch or perhaps boredom. Sweets ALWAYS needed to sneak in!
There were lots of stress that inevitably morphed into constant anxiety & an extremely negative imagery of myself. Though I’d confront no inhibitions in presenting myself before a bunch or speaking to them for hours, there would still be a part of me that could feel gutted for no reason. I would feel vague even upon an accomplishment; always prepared to look back on myself & worry endlessly about things that just did not matter. Panic attacks were common no matter how small or negligible the scale of my difficulty was.
An annoying issue I especially noticed was how pathetically frail my memory was. So each time I needed to cover it with my spouse or Mother in mad ways (They still have their laughs at this BTW !)
So, here are 9 ways that helped ME quit sugar for good since this April. I am still going strong & think I’d ALWAYS BE!
1. FEEL the requirement to do so
You cannot stop anything simply because you see some folks around doing so. Or maybe an influencer for that issue. Neither do I say this article of mine will be THE EYEOPENER for you.
Since nothing can be shoved down your throat if you don’t realize yourself what a mess you’ve been in!
I had this coming only toward the end of this March when I realized I’d piled up some extra weight having worked my bum off the site & client assignments while feasting myself with biscuits & granola bars in between. Also ordering Breezer for a few parties as my beverage. I know, IRONY happens everywhere! So does SUGAR. Although I quit carbonated drinks, processed foods & packaged juices a good 5 years ago, I wonder how I allow Breezer be among my favorites later on!
Well, the idea of stopping white sugar did not dawn upon me with an overnight resolution or a straight kick in the butt out of anyone. But, I’d say it was a slow procedure. Frankly, I felt inspired to take this quitting affair seriously only after I saw my blogger friend Shailaja Vishwanath posting gritty Instagram tales about her life after quitting sugar. And this was a HUGE inspiration for me personally, who really advocated healthful lifestyle habits.
“What could I substitute all the sweetness with?”
Well, I have to totally credit the famous, yet incredibly humble Simrun Chopra here. Though she is never actually placarded her social platforms together with the cliched”QUIT SUGAR” articles, all her intent is to promote doable & simple ways to eat healthy. But she insists on innovating every dish with natural sweeteners like fruits, cinnamon & similar ingredients.
And well, this was EXACTLY what I was searching for! Not having to say goodbye to the entire taste of sweetness from my life.
This had me sorted with the choice to quit sugar FOREVER.
2. Don’t Stop Sugar COLD TURKEY
Quitting anything cold turkey may trigger a good deal of unpleasant symptoms of withdrawal. Like previously, I’d tried quitting my favourite Ginger Tea with breakfast. But that always triggered headaches after lunch time which would not stop until I had tea daily.
So, here’s what I did.
For a week, I reduced the amount of sugars I added to my tea. In my surprise, that the tea was still wonderful!
And for another week, I would lower the quantity of jaggery till I was able to quit the morning tea in a month’s time. Voila! No headaches or lethargy either!
I would call this my first counter strike on processed sugar.
Nonetheless, according to nutrition studies, jaggery is a far more nutritious sweetener compared to refined sugar with no substantial toxic effects on the body like the latter.
You could also try this totally free viable & realistic 7-Day Sugar Detox programme out of Happy Bellyfish. I found this equally complementing to my attempts in proceeding sugar-free. Specially in strengthening my mindset into ditching sugar.
3. Quit sugar Vs Replace sugar
Before you stop something you adore, always search for healthier alternatives.
Experts have established that artificial sweeteners are as worse as sugar when it comes to their ill-effects in our health.
Nor is it wise to select granola bars made with undisclosed sugar replacements or items that read”LOW FAT”. These are scammy advertising gimmicks, according to nutritionists.
4. Revamp your pantry until you quit sugar
Out of sight is DEFINITELY our of thoughts!
Please get rid of every sugary snack you have been stuffing on your pantry or bite dabbas. Sometimes, a baked/stir-fried & experienced sweet potato also works wonders to your’snack appetite’.
5. Snack regularly
And it’s very similar to smokers who can’t think of anything else besides catching up with some fag on the workplace patio. Since sugar is predominantly a addictive ingredient.
To avert this, invest in veggies & maintain a lot of them & some of the above-mentioned snacks handy. These could be carried in small boxes & they always fulfill your hunger pangs.
To keep healthy & active daily, it’s important to have at least 2 great snack times; between breakfast & lunch, & between lunch & dinner. Remember never to succumb to any peer pressure in case somebody offers you your regular sugary snack. Saying NO there rewards you forever. You’re not depriving yourself by the taste in any way. You simply ditch a crappy component!
I could easily stay away from Diwali sweets made out of sugar & instead relished those I made myself using healthier ingredients.
At precisely the exact same time, it’d be moot if you keep savoring your tea/coffee, just like a hundred times per day in the vending machine! Try to take some jaggery powder in zip-lock sachets or employ a nutritious sweetener (if available on your office) instead.
Snacking at the right intervals keeps hunger pangs away where you move urgently mindless about exactly what sugary stuff you’re eating.
6. Drink the ideal stuff!
It is surprising to me how often drinking 10-12 glasses of water was part of my own listicles! And it makes it too when you’re trying to quit sugar.
A good deal of times, it is just thirst which pesters us into fulfilling our tummy. Thus, whenever you end up feeling hungry at odd times, try drinking a glass of water check. Improper hydration may also trigger sugar cravings.
Additionally opt not to choose milkshakes or fruit juices included with sugar. Most fruits are obviously sweet & high on fiber which doesn’t call for’juicing’ them at the first place! If you want to enjoy something of this sort, make it or get it with no sugar.
Should you like alcohol, limit it.
Lack of exercise makes you feel bad all through the day. So get moving & kick some ass!
Pick up easy exercises to begin with. Like walking, half push ups, squats & few simple Yoga asanas. Don’t keep staring at your screen because insidiously boring chair!
You see, it is again a vicious cycle.
You retain sitting > Get bored/tired -> Crave sweets to kill the boredom
Stop that. NOW!
8. See your SKIN
Sugar is proven to affect your skin in the worst possible manner.
Here is an extract from a research that determines how sugar consumption results in GLYCATION; a process where sugar molecules become connected to the collagen in your skin (which leaves reparability & elasticity to skin into prevent/delay aging ) & leaves it stiff, making it difficult to be elastic .
I discovered how removing processed sugar not just helped me keep my weight better but also reflected well in my facial skin. You see the difference in this picture where the 1st image shows a considerably dryer & scar-prone epidermis together with indications of a breakout. And the 2nd picture (unfiltered) though clicked under a different light, has a rather clearer looking skin that was me after quitting sugar 100%.
Mind you, I still get migraines if I chance to drink less water and sleep less. Therefore, you see, a little bit of discipline always has to be there.
9. Find your comfort cushions
No. Not the literal ones!. You frequently tend to wind up with sugary foods & drinks when you are feeling stressed or low for whatsoever motive.
Find more logical & conducive solutions into beating the psychological stress. Catch up with a friend, talk to a dear colleague, or call up your partner to loosen up, vent out or perhaps rant about your own problems.
That feels far better. Know your flaws & figure out ways aside from food or sugar to overcome it.
Frankly, I see a massive shift in my awareness to issues & stressful or panicky situations now, after having quit sugar. I really don’t get easily get angry at people, nor do I lose my cool if I lose any significant document today.
I believed it should have been a placebo impact today that I have been linking quitting of sugar with every positive shift in my life. But, no.
Here is what scientists have to say about how sugar characteristics to stress & emotional turmoils which frequently culminates into a vicious cycle there.
